Police have exploded an unknown substance found during a search warrant of a home in Kallangur, north of Brisbane.

A section of Coppin Street West and Gardner Street West was closed about midday when police from the Sunshine Coast executing a search warrant found a number of "potentially volatile" substances.

Specialist police from the Explosives Ordinance Response Team were called in and conducted a controlled explosion of one substance, while others were deemed innocuous.

Inspector Steve Flori said it remained unclear what the explosive substance was, and scientists were working to identify it now.

The emergency declaration made just before midday has been lifted.

A 45-year-old old man is in custody on drug-related charges not linked to the explosive substance.

Insp. Flori could confirm the home had not been used as a drug lab.
