Julie Bishop raises Greste case with Cairo

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says it would be a travesty of justice if journalist Peter Greste is found guilty in his absence when an Egyptian court hands down a retrial verdict later this month.

Ms Bishop told Sky News she spoke to her Egyptian counterpart on Thursday night to reiterate that Australia expects Mr Greste to be freed from all charges and hopes he will not face any penalties that will impact on his work as a foreign correspondent.

Mr Greste was deported in February and the verdict for for his retrial will be handed down on July 30.
