Who are the options for PM?

It seems all but certain that Australia will have a new Prime Minister by tomorrow afternoon.

The three candidates for the top job are all very different - but what will they all bring to the table?

PETER DUTTON

The former Home Affairs Minister is also a former Brisbane cop who chased down drug dealers.

He is a conservative whose 17 years in politics have been punctuated with controversy.

In 2008 he boycotted the apology to the Stolen Generations.

More recently, he has been accused of racism over comments about street crime in Melbourne, dubbing it "African gang violence".

Mr Dutton has also had to apologise for being caught on camera joking about climate change.

He has been an enforcer of Australia's tough offshore detention policy and regularly clashed with advocates for asylum seekers.

SCOTT MORRISON

The man they call "ScoMo" is a self-confessed happy clapper and a political moderate, but with a hardline edge as Immigration Minister.

As Treasurer, he railed against the royal commission in the banks, dismissing it as a "lawyer's picnic".

A crowning moment may have been his most recent budget, with some glowing reviews claiming he "under-promised and over-delivered".

JULIE BISHOP

The Foreign Minister is the most popular candidate by a long way, according to the latest polls.

She served as a loyal and dogged deputy leader for Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull.

Since 2013 she has represented Australia on the world stage and become the go-to minister in times of trouble and turmoil.

THE ODDS

The race to the Lodge has not only divided the Liberal Party, but also the punters.

Bookmakers have Ms Bishop the favourite at $1.72, ahead of Mr Dutton.

Mr Morrison is at odds of $8.50.

Former PM Mr Abbott has not officially thrown his hat into the ring but at $14, he could be the dark horse in the field.
