Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has given new meaning to promoting close international ties, by helping her UK counterpart Boris Johnson adjust his outfit.

Ms Bishop fixed Mr Johnson's tie before they posed for photographs during her visit to London yesterday.

The pair had met to discuss a potential free trade agreement post-Brexit.

"Britain isn't negotiating free trade agreements, it must first exit the European Union and then there are a number of countries that would seek to negotiate a free trade agreement with the United Kingdom including Australia," Ms Bishop said.

"So we will continue to seek free trade deals that benefit Australia, that create the conditions for new jobs."

Trade between the countries is currently worth $27 billion per year.

Earlier this week, Ms Bishop met US Vice President Mike Pence to discuss the refugee resettlement deal and other issues.
