Judge denies bail for man accused of ‘very violent’ Brisbane rape

An alleged rape victim's injuries were so bad it was hard to believe they could have been caused by consensual sex, a court has heard.

The detail was revealed in a bail application for one of the men accused of raping a woman in a South Brisbane laneway on April 15, 2005.

The man, from New South Wales, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was only arrested with another man last December, after an appeal for information from police.

The court heard police conducted phone taps following the alleged crime, and that the man's co-accused told his father the woman consented to the sex.

"This rape was very violent, to the extent that a very experienced forensic doctor said her injuries were to an extent that it was hard to believe that what went on could have been consensual," Justice Jean Dalton said.

The man's bail was denied.

Earlier, defence Lawyer Andrew Christie said his client's case hinged on identifying him in the location of the offence.

Police will allege CCTV footage captured him and his co-accused in the area, and that DNA from the pair was found on a cigarette at the scene.
