Joyce hobbles his way to meet with PM

Barnaby Joyce will be hobbling his way to a meeting with Malcolm Turnbull.

The Nationals leader was head-butted by a sheep on his NSW property while working on Tuesday.

"The dorper ran and lined me up in the yard and ... hit me once in the knee," he told 2GB radio.

Instead of saying a "whole heap of profanities", Mr Joyce admitted he probably should have then got out of its way.

"All it did was hit me again and now I'm hobbling around like an old geriatric."

Mr Joyce is due to sit down with the prime minister on Wednesday, as well as the pair's deputies Fiona Nash and Julie Bishop.

"I was going to wander down after lunch but (Mr Turnbull) wants me there sooner so I'll jump on a plane and try and get down there sooner," he said.

The meeting comes a day after Nationals MPs and senators met to discuss a new coalition agreement and expectations for more ministers after picking up an extra MP at the July 2 election.

Mr Joyce says not much can be done until next week, when the governor-general returns to Australia.

"It's like marriage - marry in haste, repent at leisure. Make sure you get the agreement right and that's what I intend to do."

National MP Mark Coulton says negotiations for the agreement will cover the "very important" issue of cabinet appointments.

"With an increased representation across the coalition, it is expected that an additional cabinet position will be allocated to a Nationals minister which is a tremendous advantage for rural and regional Australia," he wrote on his website.
