Kate Jones to quietly launch Ashgrove election campaign

The woman who most threatens Premier Campbell Newman's re-election in Queensland is about to quietly launch her campaign in Brisbane.

Former Labor minister Kate Jones was unseated from the inner-Brisbane seat of Ashgrove in 2012 by Mr Newman, who made an audacious bid to become the state's premier without first holding a seat in the state's parliament.

He now holds Ashgrove with a 5.7 percent margin.

But recent polling, political pundits and even betting agencies have predicted Ms Jones will reclaim the seat, with many citing Mr Newman's authoritarian leadership style turning off his constituents' support.

Mr Newman has tried to woo back voters by pork-barrelling his electorate with $10.5 million in infrastructure upgrades so far during the campaign.

Ms Jones, meanwhile, has had a quieter approach, presumably in an effort to prevent the media circus that took place during the 2012 campaign and infuriated fed-up Ashgrovians.

That will continue today when she launches her campaign with a modest event at the Ashgrove Golf Club, where she'll charge $40 a head to attend.

Ms Jones has shied away from most media so far, with Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk insisting Ms Jones has been too busy talking with constituents.

Ms Palaszczuk is not expected to attend the launch, instead continuing across the state to spread Labor's message ahead of the January 31 poll.

Federal Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek will be the special guest at the launch.
