'I have never acted inappropriately': Ex-NT Police Commissioner speaks out after shock resignation over misconduct allegdations

Former Northern Territory Police Commissioner John McRoberts has spoken out after his shock resignation yesterday, saying he maintains he has done nothing that would lead to a conflict of interest.

Mr McRoberts stepped down yesterday after losing the confidence of the government when allegations emerged he had interfered in a criminal investigation into Darwin travel agent Xana Kamitsis.

Ms Kamitsis, is accused of defrauding taxpayer money through a government-run senior’s travel scheme and the matter is now before the courts.

It is understood investigators suspect Mr McRoberts and Ms Kamitsis had a relationship, after phone and travel records showed they had been in Sydney and Timor at the same time.

"I maintain that in repsect to any criminal investigation that has been conducted by Northern Territory police officers, that I have never acted inappropriately," Mr McRoberts told 9NEWS.

Asked if he had shared a romantic connection with Ms Kamitsis, he said he would not comment on the matter.

9NEWS understands that the action that led to Mr McRoberts losing the government's confidence was the alleged overturning of a search warrant directed as Ms Kamitsis.

Only when Mr McRoberts was out of town did the high-profile raid and arrest of the travel agent go ahead.

The ex-commissioner said he did not accept he had done anything that led to a conflict of interest.

However, he said he accepted others might form their own views.
