Job cuts may not hit services: Vic premier

Public sector job losses in the federal budget would not necessarily result in cuts to services, Victorian Premier Denis Napthine says.

With reports that the Abbott government is seeking to take the budget axe to dozens of federal agencies and cut 16,000 public sector jobs, Dr Napthine said this would not necessarily result in cuts to services in Victoria.

"I think any organisation, whether they be a business or government, have got to strive for greater efficiencies and better services," Dr Napthine told reporters on Monday.

"When you have greater efficiencies, you have more resources to put into key services ... helping those in need."

Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews predicted hard-working Victorian families would not get the support they need from the federal budget.

Mr Andrews said the debt levy plan, petrol excise hike and the expected GP co-payment would be bad news for Victorian families.

"Who knows where he'll (Tony Abbott) go in terms of cutting the services that are so important for hard-working families across Victoria," Mr Andrews said.
