‘Jesus Saves’ written in gigantic letters over Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

A plane has taken to Sydney’s skies today to write the words “Jesus Saves” in gigantic letters over the annual Mardi Gras celebrations in the city.

The huge message written in the sky was first spotted by punters taking part in this year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras around 5pm.

To the pleasure of many revellers however, the word “Jesus” had partly faded in the wind before the plane could write “Saves”.

While many voiced their frustrations about the writing, many took to social media to find the humour in “Jesus coming to Mardi Gras”.

It was the 40th instalment of the annual parade and party and the first year since same-sex marriage legislation was passed in Australia.

More than 1000 police patrolled the CBD with security ramped up for the celebrations, including blockages and intelligence monitoring any possible threats to the parade.

More than 2000 participants took part in the festivities, with 200 colourful floats taking to the streets.

A group of about 250 people from the original Mardi Gras celebration, dubbed the “78ers”, were in the crowd for the event – which is headlined by Goddess of Pop and longtime LGBTQI community advocate, Cher.
