Jennifer Lawrence was dragged to safety by a security guard after fans stormed protective barriers outside the David Letterman studios overnight.

The actress had stopped to greet the throng of onlookers lining the street ahead of her appearance on the American television talk show.

But her bodyguards were forced to step in and Lawrence whisked away after an overzealous few pushed the metal barrier forward.

Photos of the 24-year-old reveal her panic, as she makes a dash for her waiting car.

Lawrence appeared to have composed herself on the show, where she was promoting the new Hunger Games movie.

Speaking to Letterman about her latest role, she said she was forced to tackle her "biggest fear" on set.

"I do not like singing in front of other people," she said. "It's like my biggest fear.

"I cried on set that day. It was awful."
