Jarryd Hayne takes the stand during sexual assault trial

Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne says he was "apologetic" after injuring a woman during what he says was a consensual encounter on NRL grand final day in 2018.

Hayne, 32, gave evidence for the first time today about the events which saw him charged with aggravated sexual assault.

The alleged victim is a young woman who contacted him on Instagram.

"I'm not gonna lie, I imagined what it would be like to be f***ing you when you started talking," she wrote in one message.

Hayne told the court she also sent him nudes and lingerie shots on Snapchat.

"It was a bit full-on straight away … she was pretty straight to the point."

They continued to communicate throughout the weekend he spent in Newcastle for a buck's and he decided to go to her house on the way home.

He'd been drinking all day and said while he was intoxicated he was aware of his surroundings.

"I knew she was keen … best case scenario I would be having sex with her, worst case scenario I'd just introduce myself" he said when asked what his intentions were.

Her mother answered the front door.

"I thought it was weird. I had never met her before why would you get your mum to answer the door."

Inside he said she appeared nervous so he said he played a couple of his "go to" songs which included Ed Sheeran.

Hayne said she noticed his taxi was waiting outside and asked him about it.

"I kinda of just stared at her and answered in my head you knew I was going to Sydney, why what's the confusion?"

He then went outside to tell the driver to wait.

The woman has previously claimed that's when she told her mother he was only here "for one thing" and there was "no way" she was going to have sex with him.

Hayne said when he realised the Roosters were winning the grand final he went into the lounge room to watch the end of the game with her mother.

The court heard he told her he was jealous.

"I had a chance to sign with them back in 2016 so those thoughts of it could have been me winning the comp," he explained today.

Then he went back to the bedroom where he said he kissed her, she kissed him back and then took off her own pants.

"I knew she didn't want to have sex but I thought I'd just please her."

Hayne claimed she didn't say "no" or "stop" as she alleged, and that she was enjoying it.

He said then he noticed a liquid.

"It was like a shock, I jumped up…I jumped up and looked at my hand straight away and there was blood."

"I said it's obviously just my finger, it has obviously cut you… she was a bit rattled."

Hayne told the jury he reassured her and told her if it was still painful tomorrow she should go to the doctor.

Then he says he left.

The court has heard in the next hour she sent him text messages which said "I am hurting so much" and "I know I have talked about sex and stuff so much but I didn't want to do that after knowing the taxi was waiting for you."

Hayne only replied "go doctor tomorrow".

"I remember reading it, you know what do I reply? I've already explained how the blood came out, I've explained what to do…" he explained today.

The court was played a phone call from former Origin teammate Mitchell Pearce which was recorded by police.

"Who's this sheila come out saying something about ya?" Pearce asked Hayne.

"Full-blown weirdo," Hayne replied.

"I'll get her for defamation easy," he added.

Hayne will continue giving evidence on Monday.
