James Hird burglary: Teen charged over theft of former Essendon coach's car

A 15-year-old boy has been charged following a burglary at the Melbourne home of former Essendon player and coach James Hird.

Hird and his family were sleeping at their Toorak home on May 18 when their silver Audi Q7 station wagon and some electrical items were stolen during the alleged burglary.

Some of the items were later recovered 30km away in Hallam.

The teen, from Dandenong, was this morning charged with multiple offences including aggravated burglary, car theft and handling stolen goods.

He is expected to face a children's court at a later date.

After the alleged burglary, a shaken Hird said the family woke to find the car gone.

"We were all upstairs sleeping, it was a bit scary," he told 9NEWS.

"My son actually woke up and saw the door was open, but didn't think much of it.

"Not ideal, but luckily no-one was hurt."

After a decorated career as a player, Hird returned to the Bombers as coach in 2010.

He was suspended for 12 months in 2013 for his role in the club's supplements scandal and returned after the 2014 season.

Hird resigned as senior coach in 2015 following a string of poor results from the club.
