Court hears case of Jakob Thornton after allegedly driving into police officers at Sydney RBT

The 22-year-old man accused of mowing down two police officers setting up an RBT at Leumeah, in Sydney's southwest, on Friday night has had his case mentioned briefly in court.

Jakob Thornton was allegedly looking at his mobile phone when he hit Senior Constables Jonathan Wright and Matthew Foley.

Jonathan suffered such traumatic life threatening injuries his right leg was severed, with surgeons forced to amputate his right foot.

Matt sustained serious leg, arm and head injuries and will be incapacitated for a lengthy period of time and will have to undergo intense physical therapy as well as major psychological injuries.

Both officers remain in Liverpool hospital.

Thornton, who’s been charged with six offences including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, wasn’t required to appear in Campbelltown court but a number of his friends were present.

The case was adjourned until March 7 while the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decides whether to refer the matter to the District Court.

Thornton was allegedly looking at his phone for 10 to 20 seconds while travelling 60km an hour prior to the crash.

He has been fined for being on his phone while driving before.

A GoFundMe page for Jono has almost reached $100,000 to go towards helping his family pay the mortgage and bills.

A page for Matt has raised almost $24,000, while a third appeal for the two officers has been created by NSW Police Legacy.
