Woman 'pretended to be dead' during 'cruel' assault as man demanded $1000

A man has been jailed for a "vile and protracted" home invasion in which a woman pretended to be dead in a bid to end the ordeal.

Abdul Jalil Mohamed Abdel Sadek, 21, was sentenced in Brisbane District Court today after the attack in the early hours of May 7, 2023 in Margate, north of Brisbane.

Sadek and an accomplice concealed their faces and entered the home via an unlocked back patio door before assaulting and torturing the woman in her bedroom, the court was told.

Crown prosecutor Isabelle MacNicol said Sadek covered the woman's face with a pillow while the accomplice repeatedly punched her, demanding $1000.

After the woman told them she didn't have any money, the accomplice threatened her with a black handgun.

The woman's finger tip was severed as they continued to assault her after she crawled into the kitchen, with the accomplice allegedly filming some of the abuse.

"At one stage, your co-offender put a hand over her mouth to block her breath, she went limp and pretended to be dead hoping that the ordeal would stop," Judge John Allen said.

The woman was later taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital where she was treated for seven head lacerations requiring 137 stitches and staples.

"It was a sustained and cruel course of violence towards an innocent complainant," Judge Allen said.

"The violence was vile and protracted."

The woman said in her victim impact statement that she had suffered physical, social, emotional and financial pain since the attack.

The court was told of Sadek's substance abuse, beginning with alcohol as a child before illicit substances as an adult.

"You were abusing methamphetamine at the time of your offending and had accumulated a drug debt, which was the financial motivation behind your offending," the judge said.

Sadek pleaded guilty to a number of offences including torture and grievous bodily harm.

Sadek was sentenced to six years in jail as family members, including his parents, looked on.

He will be eligible for parole in July 2026.
