‘I’m not a liar’: Lambie hits back as PUP split rumours reach tipping point

Palmer United Party Senator Jacqui Lambie will make a decision on her future early next week after her own party turned on her and leader Clive Palmer condemned her as a "liar".

Senator Lambie and and Mr Palmer have been at odds for weeks, but the conflict has exploded in recent days, with the Tasmanian senator crossing the floor to oppose her party colleagues and sink the government's financial advice reforms.

Mr Palmer yesterday accused Senator Lambie of lying to the Senate that he was bullying her, and said she was planning to set up her own political party.

However, Senator Lambie today denied both accusations.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament House in Canberra, she said founding her own political party would be an "overload" for her.

"I just want to do what I was elected to do," she said.

"I just want to stay honest. I want my integrity to stay intact and I just want to get on with the job."

She confirmed she was receiving legal and parliamentary advice on breaking away from PUP, but said she had not made a final decision.

"I'm going back home for the weekend to be around my Tasmanians and my Tasmanian mentors down there," she said.

"Obviously, I'll make a decision from there on in."

Senator Lambie's position in the party is already tenuous after she was sacked as deputy leader and deputy whip.

Her chief of staff, former Queensland MP Rob Messenger, was also expelled from the party for "mischief-making".

Mr Palmer accused Senator Lambie of being Mr Messenger's "mouthpiece".

However, the senator established herself as a breakaway faction within the party early in her political career.

Her extreme stance on banning Islamic facial coverings, and her uncompromising demand for a better pay deal for the ADF, put her at odds with the PUP party line.
