An Irish backpacker has shocked his parents into a flurry of expletives by Skyping them as he jumped out of a plane in Sydney.

Roger Ryan gave no warning he was skydiving when he started the video call to his mum and dad back home.

"I'll talk to you in a second I'm just going to get this out of the way," Mr Ryan says in a video of his startled parents trying to figure out what their son is doing.

The pair swear in disbelief as they suddenly realise what they're witnessing.

"He's doing a selfie coming down in the f---ing airplane," Mr Ryan's father says.

His mother screams and takes a photo of the screen as the backpacker plummets towards the ground while keeping the camera fixed firmly on himself.

The footage was published on YouTube by hostel booking site Hostelworld after they approached backpackers at Sydney's Bounce Hostel and offered them the chance to go skydiving with a twist.
