International flights land in the Gold Coast after almost two-year hiatus

International flights have begun landing in the Gold Coast again today, nearly two years after the last overseas visitors touched down in the city.

The return to pre-COVID operations at the airport has come one week before Australia's international border is set to fully reopen.

The first was a Scoot Airlines flight from Singapore, which touched down at about 7.05am local time.

All international arrivals landing in the Gold Coast must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

They will have to undertake a PCR test and isolate until they receive a negative result.

Queensland Airport Limited's boss Chris Mills has told Today the return of international flights is "so exciting" after almost two yeas.

"It's great to have the connections between Singapore and the Gold Coast and we're looking forward to international travel kicking on," he said.

However, Mr Mills said it would take time for international travel levels to get back to what they once were.

"It is very complex compared to domestic," he said.

"But we're going to see New Zealand services start in another couple of weeks.

"We're hoping to re-establish services to Japan, South Korea, other Asian destinations over the coming months."

International travel is only at 15 per cent of pre-COVID levels according to the Australian Airports Association.
