Inquiry approves social security change

Proposed laws to shake-up the income support system for remote Australians has been given the green light by a government-dominated Senate committee.

But the committee report, tabled in the Senate on Wednesday, has also raised concerns about whether communities have been properly consulted on the bill, which seeks to create new compliance rules for those living in remote areas who are eligible for payments like Youth Allowance and Newstart.

In separate dissenting reports, Labor and the Greens recommended the bill be opposed.
