Inmate stabbed in upper body at Melbourne prison

A 25-year-old male inmate has been stabbed at Port Phillip Prison in Truganina, west of Melbourne.

Police were called to the prison at about 1.30pm today after a man received lacerations and stab wounds to his upper body.

He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Firefighters also reportedly attended to a small fire in one of the cells at about 1.45pm, but nobody was injured.

The two incidents are not believed to be related.
