Indigenous MP flagged for Speaker

Australia's first indigenous federal lower house MP Ken Wyatt has been mentioned as a possible contender for Speaker.

A Liberal source told AAP the West Australian MP would be a good choice as he could restore respect for the role in the wake of the scandal over Bronwyn Bishop's expenses and was likely to gain cross-party support.

Mr Wyatt told AAP on Wednesday he had "not been approached by any colleagues".

Respected law professor Matthew Rimmer, who took to Twitter to praise Mr Wyatt, said the MP for Hasluck had "great gravitas" and was well regarded by all sides of politics.

"I don't think he would be controversial and he'd also be a very inclusive choice by Tony Abbott," Prof Rimmer told AAP on Wednesday.

"It would show his commitment to a wide range of issues."

However, the Queensland University of Technology professor said Mr Wyatt - who was elected in 2010 - may not have the same level of parliamentary experience as other contenders, such as South Australia's Dr Andrew Southcott.

Another law professor George Williams said Mr Wyatt would be "a great choice".
