Independent review launched into refugees

Employment and settlement services for newly-arrived refugees will be investigated by an independent review set up by the federal government.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he wants to make sure the government is doing everything it can to get people jobs and help them integrate into the community.

"Having a job gives people financial independence, increases their personal connections and is one of the quickest ways to improve language skills," Mr Morrison said on Thursday.

Professor Peter Shergold, an academic and former long-serving public service head, will chair the review and report to the government in February.

A federal parliamentary committee on migration, led by Victorian Liberal MP Jason Wood, recently investigated settlement outcomes with a particular focus on socially-marginalised youths involved in gang crime.
