The federal government plans to spend $7.2 million on new technology to turn out improved combat rations for the troops.

Defence Minister Marise Payne says defence will create a microwave sterilisation research and development plant at the Defence Food and Nutrition Centre in Scottsdale, Tasmania, along with a production facility in Launceston.

"Microwave-sterilised meals have the potential to improve the production and quality of ready made foods across both Defence rations and the wider commercial market, both nationally and within the Asia-Pacific region," she said on Wednesday.
