Ice use doubles in Melbourne's east

A scientific analysis of Melbourne's wastewater has revealed ice use is on the rise.

A report released on Saturday by Turning Point, in partnership with the University of Queensland, tested the levels of contaminants discharged in septic systems in Melbourne every day over a week in March.

It found that in Melbourne's east and southeastern suburbs alone, methamphetamine use doubled between 2014 and 2015. Elsewhere there was a 50 per cent increase.

The research - funded by Victoria Police and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services - also measured levels of cocaine, MDMA, alcohol and tobacco and found cocaine use had remained steady over the same period but MDMA use had decreased.
