Ice Bucket Challenge helps fund research
AAP
Thousands of Australians who took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge have helped kick-start the country's largest research project into motor neurone disease.
A group of 16 researchers from across Australia have been granted $1.05 million to build a genetic database that will be used to understand what causes MND.
About 30,000 Australians doused themselves in icy water last year to raise awareness of the terminal neurological disease.
