Swim legend Ian Thorpe released from hospital

Ian Thorpe has been released from hospital following complications from shoulder surgery.

The swimming legend spent time in an intensive care ward during the past month as he battled serious infections, contracted while in hospital.

Thorpe's manager, James Erskine, confirmed on Wednesday the Olympian had left hospital but revealed little else.

"It looks as though the infections have cleared up. It can always re-infect as it's done twice before but we are hopeful," he said.

Previously, Mr Erskine told AAP Thorpe had been very sick from contracting "two forms of bugs in hospital".

"It's serious but it's not life-threatening," he said.

Since retiring from swimming for a second time in 2013, Thorpe has endured several health setbacks.

After using antidepressants and medication for a shoulder injury, Thorpe was found by police early one morning in February 2014 near his parents' Sydney house, disoriented and attempting to enter a parked van.

His father revealed Thorpe had depression, for which he would enter a rehabilitation program.

On Wednesday, Erskine said Thorpe was unlikely to revisit a rehabilitation program following his release from hospital.

Thorpe won five Olympic gold medals, including three at his home-town Games of Sydney in 2000.
