Thorpe breaks his silence since entering rehab

Ian Thorpe has broken his silence for the first time since being admitted into a rehab clinic in Sydney last week.

The Olympic champion used his Twitter account this morning for his first public comment, congratulating Torah Bright on her silver medal in the half pipe at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

"A huge congratulations to @TorahBright for her amazing performance," Thorpe wrote.

"Awesome to watch."

It is the first time the swimming great has commented publicly since he was found disoriented outside his family's Sydney home in the early hours of February 3 as a result of anti-depressants and medication for a shoulder operation.

It is also the first time he has posted to his almost 93,000 followers since October 18.

After being taken to Bankstown Hospital following an incident that saw the Olympian try to climb into a neighbour's car, Thorpe was later admitted into rehabilitation.

His manager, James Erskine, said at the time that Thorpe faced several weeks of care as he battled clinical depression.

Bright's win in Sochi this morning makes her Australia's most successful female Winter Olympian, following her gold success for the same event in Vancouver.
