The man dubbed "Captain Underpants" after chasing down a runaway driver who crashed his car into a Queensland fish and chip shop says he wasn't trying to be a hero.

Daniel McConnell shot to national fame after he put on his "jocks" to chase the man, following the smash in the Brisbane suburb of Hendra at 2am on Thursday.

"So I was in me jocks, jumped in me car and started chasing him up the street," he told Seven Network on Friday.

"I was trying to do a good thing and help out."

Mr McConnell, who was flown from Brisbane to Sydney for the interview on the Sunrise program, said people had been asking for his autograph.

But he credited his wife for his new-found "superstar" status, saying if she hadn't woken him up he never would have ended up helping police catch the driver.

"The real hero here is my partner," he said.
