Victorian MP Geoff Shaw continues anti-abortion campaign

Victorian independent Geoff Shaw said he doesn't care if his anti-abortion advocacy means that he's a one-term MP.

Addressing a meeting of the Rise Up Australia Party today, Mr Shaw said he would continue to try to repeal the state's abortion laws, even if it cost him votes.

"This is not about whether I'm a one-term or a two-term (MP)," he said.

"Life goes on for me. But it doesn't go on for the kids who get aborted."

The controversial MP said on abortion reform: "instead of saving puppies and trees, how about we give a voice to the voiceless".

Mr Shaw described his former Liberal Party colleagues as "moral cowards" for refusing to debate the issue.

Rise Up Australia will field around 40 candidates at the November 29 election, including controversial pastor and party leader Danny Nalliah.

The party is pushing for a return to corporal punishment in schools, a rejection of multiculturalism and a banning of Islamic facial coverings.

After describing Islam as a "death cult", Mr Nalliah denied that Rise Up Australia was a "hate" party, saying he only had love for all his fellow Australians.

Rise Up Australia has done preference deals with the Democratic Labour Party and the Australian Christian Party.

In 2008, Mr Nalliah stirred outrage when he said the Black Saturday bushfires were a punishment from God for Victoria's decriminalisation of abortion.
