Malcolm Turnbull thinks he will struggle to give up working when the time comes.

Asked about his future retirement plans, the prime minister conceded "all good things come to an end", but doubts he will be able to throw in the towel completely.

"I think I will always, subject to my health of course, be working," he told 3AW's Neil Mitchell on Thursday.

Mr Turnbull citied the thoughts of friend Ian Hickey from the Brain and Mind Centre.

Professor Hickey often says one of the big challenges for middle-aged and older men is that they're not very good at coping with stopping work.

Mr Turnbull said it's important for men to keep active and stay involved in projects such as Men's Sheds.

Mr Mitchell joked they could take nominations for the prime minister's next job.

But Mr Turnbull was quick to reassure people there were "many years to come".
