Thousands of people march in Newcastle against domestic violence after young mum killed

Thousands of people have gathered in Newcastle to rally against domestic violence after the death of a young mother who was allegedly murdered by her ex-partner.

Police allege Tyrone Thompson, 22, stabbed Mackenzie Anderson, 21, multiple times at a unit in the city's north-west on Friday night. She died at the scene.

Mr Thompson has since been charged by police and remains behind bars.

People walked for nearly a kilometre through Newcastle to Nobby Beach, holding signs saying "enough is enough" and chanting "we say no to domestic violence".

The women were not only taking to the streets for Ms Anderson but also for other victims of domestic violence.

"Having been through domestic violence myself, I stand against it so much," one woman told 9News.

"I'm marching on behalf of so many women I know and myself who have gone through domestic violence situations," another woman said.

Women were calling for action from political leaders to prevent domestic violence during the march.

"There needs to be action from our political leaders instead of just silence, too many women are dying," one woman said.

At least 14 women have been killed as a result of alleged domestic violence across Australia so far this year.
