Police are waiting on test results to identify human remains found in bushland on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

A tip-off led police to the grisly discovery in dense scrub near Diamond Bay Road in Sorrento yesterday.

The search by police and State Emergency Service volunteers came after a public appeal for information on missing woman Joanne Martell.

"Since we did media recently in relation to a missing person we've had a variety of information come in. This is one aspect of the investigation," Detective Inspector Michael Hughes told reporters.

Ms Martell, 45, disappeared in mid-2015 after leaving her dog Biscuit at a friend's house on the Mornington Peninsula but she wasn't reported missing until May 2016.

Det. Insp. Hughes said it was unclear whether the cases were linked, adding the appeal for information had led to "a variety of information coming in".

"There's nothing to connect this to any high-profile missing person investigations, but we really don't know," he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
