Police have removed what is believed to be a second body part from the Maribyrnong River after another limb was found floating in the water earlier today.

Officers retrieved what is believed to be a forearm after it was spotted by people walking along the riverbank in Moonee Ponds at around 1.30pm.

Amateur vision obtained by 9NEWS shows police retrieving the limb from the water before taking it away for forensic testing.

Water police, SES and the police airwing unit continued to scour the area this afternoon in an effort to locate any other body parts.

A second body part was reportedly found just after 6pm.

Police removed the object wrapped in blue plastic from the scene but would not clarify if it was related to their investigation.
