Hugo the tortoise tucks into fruit cake on his 67th birthday
Hugo the Galapagos tortoise has marked his 67th birthday by digging into fruit ‘cake’ on the TODAY Show.
Three men carried Hugo, who weighs 150kg, into the studio for his special appearance this morning.
“He’ll keep growing…he could reach more than 300kg,” zookeeper Dan Rumsey from the Australian Reptile Park said.
Hugo tucked into a large birthday ‘cake’, made from watermelon and rockmelon, as hosts Tom Steinfort and Deborah Knight discussed the reptile’s potential breeding partners.
“There’s no tortoise Tinder out there…how do you find a mate for a big fellow like this?” Steinfort asked Mr Rumsey.
“It’s not easy, you’ve got to pick the right girl for him,” the zookeeper joked.
Despite reaching the average retirement age for humans, at 67 years old Hugo is only now approaching middle age for his species.
Galapagos tortoises typically live to between 150 and 200 years.
