How will the Melbourne train drivers strike affect you?

Melbourne commuters are bracing for traffic chaos, with the city’s train drivers set to go on strike again today.

It is the third major disruption to Melbourne's public transport in two weeks, after tram drivers went on strike for four hours last week and early morning train services were affected yesterday.

• Drivers are striking between 10am and 2pm today, during which time there will be no train services.

• Services will be heavily affected between 8.15am and 4pm as trains are pulled from the system

• More than 700 services are expected to be affected.

• All roadworks within 15km of the CBD have been cancelled to cope with the expected increase road traffic.

• Around 500 extra taxi drivers will be allowed to operate to offer more services for commuters, with car pooling also encouraged among city workers.

• An extra 350 buses will also run, while trams are expected to be packed.

• Anyone who is able to stay home today is urged to do so.

Negotiations between the union and Metro went late into last night but were unable to prevent the industrial action.

Metro has offered train drivers a 17 percent pay rise over four years.

The drivers’ union says they are being asked to give up important conditions.
