WHAT'S AT STAKE AND WHAT'S BEEN PROMISED TO SAVE THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

THE STATE OF THE REEF:

- Scientists, including naturalist Sir David Attenborough, say reef is in grave danger

- Primary threats are poor water quality and climate change

- Scientists, campaigners say no party is offering enough money

- $16b needed over 10 years, according to preliminary Qld govt modelling

- UNESCO could still decide to list the reef as a World Heritage site in danger

- 93 pct of reef affected by 2016 coral bleaching

THE COALITION'S REEF PLAN:

- $1b over 10 years to reduce run-off and carbon emissions

- Money to come from funds administered by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation

- Concessional loans for farmers and others to cut erosion and run-off and switch to green energy

- Money is on top of existing $461m reef health initiatives

LABOR'S REEF PLAN:

- $500m over five years, including $377m in new money

- Up to $300m for projects to improve water quality and to fight invasive species

- Includes $50m for climate and reef research at the CSIRO

- Reef management structures to be overhauled to improve conservation efforts

THE GREENS' REEF PLAN:

- $2.18b over five years

- Includes about $2b to address water quality

- Help for farmers to move to less polluting and more sustainable practices

- A legal cap on water quality pollution in reef catchments
