How Australian food will be labelled

NEW FOOD LABELLING REGIME

* Foods processed in Australia will carry the green and gold kangaroo triangle icon.

* A gold bar will show what proportion of ingredients were grown in Australia.

* Labels will identify "Made in Australia", "Grown in Australia" or "Packed in Australia".

* "Made in Australia" redefined so importing ingredients and chopping them up no longer counts.

* New labels will start to appear on packages by end of year if companies voluntarily use them.

* Mandatory roll-out will start in 2016, after agreement from states and territories.

* Companies encouraged to include extra information about origin of ingredients, eg "Made in Australia from Canadian pork"

* New system will cost business $37 million a year
