An elderly couple escaped from their burning home in Sydney with just two photo albums and their mobile phone.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at 7.30am on the corner of Terry and Schultz Streets, Balmain.

Firefighters battled the blaze as smoke billowed across the city's inner west, but the house couldn't be saved.

Stefani Gorgioski said her parents had lived at the house for more than 40 years.

But they were unable to save much apart from what her father took, she said.

"He grabbed the first things he could which was his phone and two photo albums and ran out," Gorgioski said.
