Hornsby Hospital set for huge transformation

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is in for a huge transformation, with work beginning on a multi-million dollar redevelopment.

The hospital is one of the most neglected in Sydney, with doctors going as far as secretly recording the conditions they have to work in.

One such recording shows mouldy ceilings, cramped spaces and surgical theatres that look more like storage cupboards.

The NSW Government has committed more than $300 million for two stages of the redevelopment, with work on Stage Two commencing today.

The new building will include world-class intensive care, coronary and cardiac wards, MRI scans and imaging, plus more services for children.

"We've had to transfer a lot of patients out," Hornsby's Director of Emergency Clare Skinner said.

"Now we will have facilities where we can do MRI scans locally, cardiac procedures locally – it will be great."

9NEWS understands Premier Gladys Berejiklian has quietly set aside an additional $50 million to add a helipad and other services to the hospital.

"Labor's neglect of our hospital was nothing short of criminal. This transforms our community hospital for generations to come," Hornsby MP Matt Kean said.

The new building is due to be open in 2021.
