Hoons do burnouts at teenage car crash victim’s funeral

Friends and siblings of a teenage car crash victim have been filmed during burnouts during his funeral in southern New South Wales.

Video shared to social media shows attendees at Shaun Crighton’s service cheering as a number of drivers burn rubber at Glenmorus Memorial Gardens in Albury on Saturday.

Mr Crighton, 19, died earlier this month after crashing a stolen ute into a tree.

Funeral director Graeme Johnson is among many in the community who have since described the video as an “insult” to other people buried at the site.

“I’m dead against it… I tell you if I ever caught anyone doing it, I’d have the police on the doorstep straight away,” Mr Johnson told 9NEWS.

“People go in there (the cemetery) for a reason. They go in there to mourn, because they've lost their loved ones.”

Mourner Jean Brown said she was appalled by what she witnessed on the weekend.

“When you come out and see trash like this… there’s just no respect anymore is there,” she said.

Mr Crighton’s aunt, Amy Ashlin, defended the stunt at the service, telling the Northern Daily Leader they “hadn’t meant any disrespect”.

“Burnouts were something Shaun loved,” Ms Ashlin told the newspaper.

“It was a tribute, it wasn’t meant in any way as disrespect, but just a way to say goodbye to Shaun.”

Ms Ashlin added that Mr Crighton’s brother and friends organised the burnouts.

Albury Police refused to comment on the matter, but have warned those responsible for the site's desecration will face harsh punishments and heavy fines.
