Neighbours feared for their lives when a home and car in Adelaide's northern suburbs were sprayed with bullets in a drive-by shooting yesterday.

Residents told 9NEWS they heard 16 shots fired at the Carbone Street home at Munno Para West about 9.30pm.

"We went out the back, we thought it might've been fireworks and then all of a sudden we've seen cops everywhere," Stacey McGarrigan said.

Fellow local Alex Payne said he and his wife dropped to the ground as soon as they heard the volley of shots.

"Because we were in the front room and the gunshots were that close - you're literally talking 30 metres, not even - (I) just got the wife on the ground and out of the way in case," Mr Payne said.

Bullets hit the home, garage and a blue Holden Calais, which has been seized for forensic testing.

A white Holden Commodore sedan was spotted speeding from the area in the moments after the shooting.

Neighbours say the shooting is particularly frightening because many young families live in the area.

"Pretty scary considering we've got little kids around here," Ms McGarrigan said.

"It shouldn't be happening, there's lots of families here," Daniel Marsic said.

No-one was home at the time.

Detectives from the Crime Gangs Task Force are now investigating.
