The wife of the late eye doctor Fred Hollows has won an inaugural international prize worth $200,000 for the best work in the world helping seniors.

Gabi Hollows won the Ryman Prize for her efforts with the Fred Hollows Foundation that have helped restore eyesight to one million people in 25 countries over the past 23 years.

"The joy you have in giving back someone's sight is the most amazing thing in the world," she said in a statement.
