Hockey wants G20 focus on jobs, growth

World leaders might want to discuss climate change at this weekend's G20 summit, but Treasurer Joe Hockey wants their focus to remain on jobs and growth.

As chair of this year's G20 finance minister meetings, Mr Hockey managed to secure a unique target that aims to lift world growth by an additional two per cent.

"We cannot allow ourselves ... to walk away from the focus delivering outcomes that help to create jobs and economic growth," he told ABC radio today.

Member countries have put forward more than 1000 policies as part of the growth which are being assessed by the International Monetary Fund and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

"Now the challenge will be to make sure the world follows up on delivery," Mr Hockey said.

Budget proposals for a Medicare co-payment - which will fund a $20 billion medical research fund - and deregulation of university fees are part of Australia's formal pledges to the G20 growth target.

However, both are being held up by a hostile Senate.

Mr Hockey concedes there is no silver bullet for growth in either the Australian or global economy.

"If we don't make that change now, the change that will occur in the future will be more disruptive and more difficult for the next generation of Australians," he said.
