Hockey blames social media for challenges of politics

Former Treasurer Joe Hockey has farewelled parliament, slamming social media and its “need-it-now” culture.

In a speech to parliament, Mr Hockey lauded his 2015 Budget as the best budget for small business and paid tribute to the Labor party’s National Broadband Network and National Disability Insurance Scheme.

But he said it was more difficult for parliament to examine and debate policy issues in a “measured and considered way”.

“Our jobs have become a lot more challenging over the years with the need-it-now culture.”

Mr Hockey thanked his wife for her support and pledged never to miss another of his son’s birthdays.

“Last Monday was Iggy’s sixth birthday and I’ve missed every single one of his birthdays. I won’t miss another one,” Mr Hockey said.

Mr Hockey told the parliament he “genuinely” wanted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to succeed but said both sides of politics needed to ensure the revolving door of political leaders needed to be “jammed shut”.

He thanked locals in his electorate of North Sydney for the “enormous effort” they had made throughout his political career.

Mr Hockey is expected to take up a diplomatic post in the US.
