A woman is in a critical condition after she was hit by a freight train while walking her dog in Hobart.

The train collided with the 63-year-old at a level crossing on Thursday morning while she was walking on a bike track in the city's northern suburbs.

She was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious injuries.

Crash and forensic investigators attended the scene in Claremont, but the cause of the accident remains unknown.

A witness told ABC radio the woman did not appear to notice the train.

"She just turned right into the train, didn't appear to see it," he said.

TasRail said it would carry out its own investigation and report to the Rail Safety Regulator.

"This is extremely difficult for all involved but I am grateful for the professional way they have responded to what is a distressing event," TasRail chief executive Damien White said.
