Firefighters stopped the spread of a grassfire that threatened a historic homestead at a popular Victorian coastal town.

The grassfire started on both sides of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in Dromana, about 5.50pm (AEDT), incident controller David Gibbs said.

He said firefighters were able to save the Heronswood homestead in Dromana, but a two-storey cafe on the property was destroyed.

He said there was minor damage to the heritage-listed homestead, built in 1864, and its gardens.
