Detectives have charged a 32-year-old man with murder following the alleged stabbing death of a beloved stepfather in Melbourne's west earlier this month.

Tony Di Falco, 61, was found with critical injuries by emergency services outside a home in Hillside, about 7am, on October 4.

Officers attempted CPR but the 61-year-old died at the scene.

Shortly after arriving on scene, police allege they were confronted by a 32-year-old man with an "edged weapon".

After attempting to negotiate with him to drop the weapon, the man threatened police, leading them to fire a shot.

The 32-year-old man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital under police guard in a critical but stable condition, with lower body injuries.

He has since been charged with murder and remains in hospital.

Police said a bedside remand hearing is expected to be organised this afternoon.
