High toxins close SA beach to pipi fishers

Recreational pipi fishing has been banned at a beach near Adelaide after high levels of toxins and bacteria were detected.

Levels of of Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins and E.coli above what is considered safe for human consumption have been found in pipis at Goolwa Beach, the SA Department of Primary Industries and Regions said on Saturday ahead of the pipi fishery season which was set to open on Tuesday.

"Although it is an unfortunate start to the season public safety is paramount," PIRSA Director Fisheries and Aquaculture Operations, Peter Dietman said.

He warned people not to collect or consume any pipi from the area.

Goolwa Beach from the Murray Mouth to Middleton Point near Mill Terrace at Middleton will remain closed until the shellfish quality is at a safe level.
