At least eight fire crews fought to bring the blaze under control, but the house was completely destroyed.
Country Fire Association Captain Paul Spinks confirmed the owner was safe.
He has been treated for smoke inhalation and is believed to have spent the night at a neighbour's home.
He has so far declined to speak to media and is reportedly still shaken from the ordeal.
