Health warning to sushi and stir-fry lovers

New Australian research has linked Asian-style sauces to high blood pressure.

According to the Heart Foundation, just one tablespoon of traditional soy sauce contains 61 percent of the recommended daily intake of salt.

Fish sauce is an even saltier option, with a tablespoon containing almost an entire day’s worth (91 percent) of the recommended intake.

Dietitians told 9News consumers can avoid sabotaging the otherwise healthy meals such as veggie-loaded stir-fries and sushi by looking at sauce labels closely.

“Picking a low-salt soy sauce can half the amount of salt,” Dietitian Jenny Reimers from Vic Health told 9News.

Ms Reimers added it is important to check the label, with different brands offering variable amounts of sodium in sauces.

The salt warning comes as an estimated six million people across the country suffer from high-blood pressure, which can be caused by a diet high in salt.

“We should be having no more than five grams of salt a day… that’s about a teaspoon,” Heart Foundation dietitian Sian Armstrong recommended.

High-blood pressure is a leading risk factor for stroke, kidney disease and heart attack.
